Review: Samsung Galaxy S10e case round up

As usual for my case roundups, I'll cover a variety of styles, with all samples supplied by MobileFun, kind people that they are. See their complete range of Galaxy S10e cases and covers.

The Samsung Galaxy S10e is a superb compact smartphone with every feature you could expect (jack, stereo speakers, storage expansion, capacitive finger scanner, etc.)

Hand-picked by me, in no particular order:

Samsung Pattern Covers, £18

Unusually packaged as a pair, these are cracking minimalist plastic covers with artily sculpted holes on the back, reducing weight without reducing strength.

Overall protection isn't fabulous, mind you, for drops, since there's very little 'raise' at each end on the front, so a true screen-down drop would probably be curtains.

You can't argue with the cosmetics of the design though, which looks fabulous with one of the mirror-finished S10e devices. The finish is slightly rubberised and is a pleasure to hold and (err....) fondle.

Plus two of these official covers for £18? Bargain!

Samsung Leather Cover, £30

What you're paying for here, then, is the material science. This is a moulded sheet of leather bonded to a thin plastic substrate - as far as I can tell. Jolly clever stuff, even if the end result isn't a million miles from the feel and protection of the far cheaper official 'plastic' cases above.

I do like my leather though - and this is an ultra-thin way to experience it in a form fitting case. The leather feel - and smell - are there, albeit in minimalist form and I can imagine buying this with the Galaxy S10e and then never wanting to take the phone out of it again.

In other words, you're turning the S10e into a 'leather phone' - or that's how it feels. At a price. £30 is still steep for a case this minimal, however premium the leather.

The end protection is again almost non-existent, so this second official case also prioritises style and feel over absolute protection.

Olixar Attache Leather style, £10

One of my favourite Olixar designs from previous round-ups, this is a winner on every single count. It's tough as old boots, including at least a millimetre of coverage all round the front, i.e. the screen. It's durable, in tough and textured TPU. And it looks great, seemingly encasing your S10e in black leather.

Of course, it's merely leather-effect moulding, but the illusion is terrific. And, by not using leather (or even faux leather), the fit can be made super-close, hugging, plus the price is way more affordable.

Probably my favourite from the cases in this round-up, I can't fault it. Just buy it, even if you have another, flashier case for heading down the pub!

Score: 10/10

Olixar ExoShield, £10

Another classic protective design, this clear case lets you enjoy more of the native colouring of your S10e.

It's not as smooth in the hand as the cases looked at above, thanks to the moulding lines and the four small feet on the underside, but these all help with grip and the feet make sure the case stays put when on a table or desk.

The air bubble corners give maximum protection for a corner drop, the most common kind, plus there's a solid millimetre around the screen at the front. In short, you're covered for any kind of fall.

My only worry is that the clear plastic on the back will show up day to day scratches and impacts more than the textured TPU of the Attache design above. But that aside, this is another super Olixar case, and you can't beat the price.

Score: 9/10

Zizo Bolt Tough Case, £13

OK, so this case is a bit silly. Maybe if you worked on a building site all day long? Or were in the army? The degree of protection here is insane. An extra half a centimetre on the back alone, with integral kick stand. Plus an extra centimetre on the front if you include the supplied shield, with an extra swivelling belt clip adding a further centimetre.

Wow. Knocks and drops can't get to your Samsung S10e, but then it sometimes feels as if you can't get to it too. I exaggerate a little, but you get the idea. You're not even recommended to touch the phone's glass, with a tempered glass protector also supplied. AND a nice lanyard, for neck use, should you decide not to go with the belt clip system.

It's all too much for the casual user, but the low price does come as a pleasant surprise. Maybe give this a try if you're into hiking or climbing or mountain biking?
