Getting an automatic Always On Display for the iPhone and iOS

It works. It really does work. How did I not know about this technique (and app?) Anyway, here's my iPhone 12 Pro Max sitting on a Qi charging pad. I put the iPhone on and - bang - up comes a true Always On Display, with date and battery status:


Is there a trick? Well, not as such (you may remember convoluted Accessibility techniques for getting AOD on an iPhone), but there are two components to get in place:

  1. The app OLEDX from the iOS App Store. It's free unless you want outrageous stuff like fancy colours and weather etc.
  2. The latest (iOS 15) Shortcuts application - this is something I've never really dived into in great detail before, but this is a great example of what can be done.

So OLEDX is installed on your iPhone? Run it and check it all works. Good.

Now run the Shortcuts utility on your phone and then tap on the 'Automation' tab at the bottom:


Tap on 'Create Personal Automation'.


Tap on 'Charger'.


Tap on 'Next'.


Tap on 'Open App'.


Tap on the little blue 'App' text, and then pick 'OLEDX' from the apps list. 


Tap on 'Next'.


To have all this fully automatic, change the 'Ask' setting to 'Don't ask', etc.

You're done. No need to tap anything on your home screens in use, no need to remember to action anything. You just plug your iPhone into a charger or put it on a Qi pad and the Always On Display will kick right in.

The only two caveats are:
  1. the iPhone screen has to be unlocked before you plug in, etc. So you wouldn't want this working in a shared office or public place, I'm guessing. If this is an issue one time, just lock the phone screen before charging and the automator process can't fully kick in - the phone will still charge, but you won't get the AOD.
  2. some types of notification mean that the OLEDX app is interrupted and the AOD is lost. You'd then have to re-enable it by taking the iPhone off charge and then back on (e.g. onto the Qi pad) or by tapping on the app icon directly. So not a perfect solution, though since your phone will be likely in DND mode all night and thus not getting notifications, the system should work well as a bedside clock.

You may well be fairly happy with the audio output (speakers and headphones) on your existing Android phone. Or, like me, you may welcome an extra step up. Bluetooth keyboard incorrect PIN or password - SOLVED

Just in case this helps anyone else, I had a nightmare today with my Bluetooth keyboard and my Android phone - but I used some common sense and found a geeky solution. In my case it was a ZTE Axon 7 running Lineage OS and a Microsoft Universal Folding Keyboard (UFK), but I suspect this cure will work for more general issues. The symptom was that when I tried to connect a previously paired keyboard I first of all got just the raw Bluetooth address shown and not the keyboard name. And then, when I tried connecting, I got an "incorrect PIN or password" error message. No chance to reenter a PIN and no amount of restarting keyboard or phone would fix it. The cure seemed to be to reset something in the phone's Bluetooth system, but what? The keyboard wasn't showing up as paired, so I couldn't 'forget' it. I tracked it down in the end. Settings, Apps, then 'Show system' on the '...' menu. Find and tap on 'Bluetooth extensions'.

How to fix Blink XT2 Camera 'Thumbnail failed' error!

Update - Jan 2023: Amazon/Blink just changed the interface in their app - so things may have moved slightly in the UI! The Blink XT2 cameras are great - a trivial way to keep an eye on a loved one (in my case an aged parent) without wires or complex DIY hassle. Just set a camera or two up on your Wifi and you can keep an eye on them from across the world.  And all is fine, generally, I tap to take a photo or video if my dad isn't answering the phone, to check where he is and whether he's OK. Yes, there's motion detection available, but I usually have this off as when he's well he'll move around and keep triggering images and videos, which then drain the batteries too quickly. (I do have motion detection on my own house's security cameras, outdoors) But recently I had the strangest error: 'Thumbnail failed' on one of the cameras and it persisted for days.  Now, I live 150 miles away and so Blink's suggestion of 'take the batteries out and put them
