Turns out I didn’t make the 1000!

Just to announce that, after 17 years and 864 shows(!), I’m stepping down from the Phones Show Chat podcast and retiring. This very week has seen my wife retire and it seems right that I spend time with her, my daughter, my home (and dog!), rather than scrabbling around week after week to gather guests, gadgets, and stories. I'd planned to stop at show 1000, but I don't feel it's right to carry on for almost another three years.



So, the obvious questions.

Will PSC continue as an audio podcast? Quite possibly, but under Ted’s capable management, either under the current or a new name/form. I’ll put out a short audio form of this on the feed next weekend, for podcatcher subscribers who might not catch the ‘news’.

Will I continue in the tech space? I’ll carry on with Phones Show Shorts on YouTube as and when I have something to say.

Will the PSC MeWe forums continue? Absolutely. Ted is their creator and they are in his hands. Again, with possible name tweaks if needed. The forums are a great place to hang out.

Apologies if you’ve been a PSC podcast addict and lover over the last 17 years. But this is life and things change. I was already 46 when I started PSC with Ted and I’m now almost 64 and entitled to retire, I contend…

More and more, I’ve been finding myself ‘contented’ with tech, and without a burning desire to keep trying ‘shiny, shiny’ and chasing what’s new. A sad confession? Possibly. Or maybe not. There’s more to life than chipsets, megapixels, and ultra-thin folding glass. Allegedly!

In terms of PSC the audio podcast, it’s been a heck of a ride. I’ll continue to be modestly active on MeWe, BlueSky, Instagram, and even Facebook. Blogging the life of (now) a retired gentleman.

Hi Steve, you will be greatly missed as John Arlott was when he stepped down from Test Match Special. Thank you for all your articulately expressed opinions over the years . Very best wishes on a well -deserved retirement.

Steve, I've enjoyed your podcasts including, I think, all of the PSC episodes and many of your previous podcasts at AAS and AAWP. Congrats on your coverage of the tranformation and revolution that smartphones (and previously PDAs) have brought to literally everyone in the world now. Sorry to no longer hear your voice and opinions but happy that I have had the chance to learn so much from you. Have fun,

You may well be fairly happy with the audio output (speakers and headphones) on your existing Android phone. Or, like me, you may welcome an extra step up. Perhaps more bass/punch, clearer treble, or perhaps just a volume boost overall. Now, there have been various 'boost' utilities for Android in the past and they've been a bit patchy in how well they work. Why the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is better than the 15 Pro Max

Forgive the click bait(y) title, but there's actual evidence here, I promise. Note that I did write an article before availability, putting forward worries and concerns , but I've now had hands-on to confirm a few things and report back.  Cased (of course, read the blooming' article!) Pro Maxes - 15 and 14 (with XtremeSkin, Aged Oak , in case you're wondering!) In fact, it's the first time ever in the iPhone line-up/evolution that I seriously think the old 'Pro Max' model can be argued to be  better than the new one. (Admittedly, that I already own the old one [14 Pro Max] and didn't really want to spend over £1000 on the 15 Pro Max possibly helps my argument from a personal perspective.) Review: Anker 737 140W power bank (PowerCore 24k)

The Anker 737 isn’t your mother’s power bank. You see that old gadget in your drawer? This isn't it.  With miniature power bank OS (complete with splash screen) and with 'phone' form factor (as in hold and operate in your right hand, if needed), this also offers 140W (!) output and input over (hot off the press) Power Delivery 3.1, plus it packs the maximum capacity it's legal to ship (at least in the UK), with 24000mAh (at 3.7V, or almost 90Wh in potential power). Reassuringly, this is from Anker, one of the few accessory makers which doesn't put a foot wrong in terms of quality, support, or marketing (i.e. no fake reviews on the likes of Amazon). And the hardware is indeed stunning, with no rattles or creaks, and with beautifully textured sides. As you can see below, the form factor is a 'phone-like' cuboid.
